Alexis Bergantz has just won the Australian History Prize in the 2022 NSW Premier's History Awards, for his book 'French Connection'.
The French population in 19th century Australia might not have been big, but French culture was much valued by the colonists, often as an abstract concept.
The little known story of French people and influence in Australia has been brought to life in Bergantz's cultural history.
This program was first broadcast on 14 July 2021.
Guest:
Alexis Bergantz, historian of Australia’s cultural connections with France
Lecturer at RMIT
Author of ‘French Connection: Australia’s cosmopolitan ambitions’ (NewSouth)
